I want to begin with one of my very first births. Clancy like many other babies was long awaited and desperately wanted. This is a birth I will never forget as the ending was not what I expected as a new doula or one that I ever want repeated. Clancy’s mom was a strong woman who labored beautifully but long. One of the things I remember most about her was her focus and determination. It’s not a birth that I would call traumatic but after a time of great pushing and mama getting tired, a vacuum was used to assist in his birth. The rest is a blur as things moved rapidly from there.

Clancy was born with brain damage due to what the doctors called a traumatic birth. This birth left me with many questions, many left unanswered, and left me feeling like I had failed desperately as a doula. Of course today I know I could not have done anything differently but when I think back to that day I still get a lump in my throat.

Clancy’s parents were told he would not walk or talk but today he walks and can talk some. He’s a joy to all who know him and brings a smile to my face when I see him.
